This is an 8" X 10" black and white photograph I took of the coil, while visiting in 1966.  The camera, a Speed Graphic 4" X 5" press camera, was being hand-held.  The shutter stuck in the open position producing the strobescopic effect.

A close-up view of the non-synchronous rotary spark gap, that operates the Griffith Tesla Coil.

griffith3.JPG (23K bytes)

A partial view of the large glass plate capacitor bank, that completes the tank circuit of the Griffith Coil.  This stack of glass plates, measuring about 20" X 30", was constructed of some 40 individual plates of glass, each being 1/4 inch thick.  This capacitor lasted for some 15 years, before it had to be replaced with a more modern construction capacitor.  Before the glass plate capacitor, the Observatory utilized the original Layden Jar units, that were part of the donated equipment given to the Observatory.
