Palm Beach County Local History from the 1920s-1960s

The museum has acquired a selection of Palm Beach history dating from the 1920s-1960s.

It was purchased originally from Jesse at the Vintage shop in Lake Park...
He bought it from the former Palm Beach High School Museum.

It may seem out of place amongst a museum of science, history, and high energy physics...
...but us historians are just that.  Sometimes we save history for the sake that it ends up in the right hands.

A perfect example is the life of Carola Mandel:

Here was a beautiful model originally from Cuba, Carola Mandel.
She was one of the top ten models in the United States in the 1940s.
Then she took up sharp shooting and became the number one Skeet Shooting Champion in the US.

This alone makes for a fascinating story... however it didn't stop there.
She also charted the coast of South America for the Navy in WWII.

This elaborate adventure included a Confidential Scrapbook (now scanned fully for the Internet Archive) .
It included, amongst other things, written and photographic evidence of the obscure islands and people.
And included photographs of German tankers and Italian schooners which were sunk.

Most of her archive was sent to Steve Ellinger who curates a skeet shooting museum in Texas.
The yacht logs were sent to Marissa Burrier, a passionate sailing instructor in St. Augustine, FL.

Endless Thanks to Inge and Tim Skelly of Stone Button Studio for allowing us the chance to preserve this!
At the end of her life, she was living on Palm Beach and when she died her life was found in a box in an attic.
