Ralph C. Browne - Browne Coil
Endless thanks to Patricia
Marcus
Original portrait of Browne (C)
Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. They were unable to supply with
a photo of the painting,
but I did receive this in one email.
Browne invented a special mine that
revolutionized the war - it used a battery made of copper mesh (and the
iron hull of a ship) to detonate,
and allowed the US to enter the North seas (which were littered with
German submarines).
Ralph's brother (who painted the
portrait above) was famous impressionist painter George Elmer Browne.
