Jeff, here are the
summary and details on Frederick Finch Strong.
Regards, Steve
Summary:
Frederick Finch Strong was born on June 6, 1872 in Aurora, New York,
the
son of a Dutch Reformed Church Clergyman, Thomas Campbell Strong.
Three of
Frederick's uncles were also Dutch Reformed Church Clergymen, as was
his
paternal grandfather. His older brother was Thomas Morris Strong,
who received
his medical degree from New York Homeopathic Medical College in
1871,
specialized in Ear, Eyes and Throat medicine. This probably inspired
Frederick
to also go into medicine. His mother, Mary Arabella Sibley, nee
Finch,
married Frederick's widowed father in September 1869, and brought a
considerable
estate with her from her recently deceased husband, Dr. Samuel L.
Sibley,
the first homeopathic physician in Ithaca, NY. Dr. Sibley's sister
was
Thomas Strong's wife, Sarah Harwood Sibley. These things often have
a way of
connecting.
Because of his pastoral profession, Frederick's father moved
relatively
often, and in 1880 the family lived in Allegheny, near Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.
After obtaining his bachelor's degree from Cornell in 1893,
Frederick
studied for a year in Germany with Dr. Paul Ehrlich. In June, 1895,
he published
a paper in the New England Medical Gazette on the Microscopical
Technique
of Blood Examination, in which he mentions he attended Professor
Ehrlich's
lectures in Berlin, and got samples of stains that Ehrlich used in
his
work. He received his M. D. from Tufts in 1898, and later served as
an
instructor at Tufts.
In 1900, Frederick lived with his married brother Thomas in Boston,
Massachusetts, and was listed as a Physician with the speciality of
Elect[ro]
Thera[peutics]. In 1910, Frederick was still single at age 36, and
lived in
St. Petersburg, Florida. In 1918 he moved to Hollywood, California,
and by
the 1920 census, he had married Ethyl Haley. They were still living
in Los
Angles in 1930, and Frederick's real estate was valued at a
considerable
$70,000. He died on June 13, 1955 in Los Angeles.
Frederick Strong received U. S. Patent 733,343 May 11, 1903 for
Electrical
Apparatus for the Use of Ultraviolet Rays. I located 10 other
patents
issued to Strong between 1904 and 1930.
