The setup I short circuited the ends of the tube to avoid any excessive glowing around the electrodes. The phantoms are indicated by the  inside walls of the tube glowing where they strike. Even faint dots can be seen a foot away or more The dots (and streams) are fast-moving and of various sizes depending on how thick the branches are. No doubt due to some static charges and capacity inside of the tube...?
